CBFA 2022 Pre-Conference
"How to Clarify What Matters,
Develop Strategy & Lead Effectively"
Presented by Dr. Nathan Mellor
October 20, 2022
Pre-Conference Schedule and Description
2:00 PM – Welcome and Introductions
2:15 PM – Clarify What Matters
An essential element of consistent leadership is Grit. At the heart of grit is identifying an “ultimate concern.” Angela Duckworth Ph.D. defines this as, “A goal you care about so much that it organizes and gives meaning to almost everything you do. And grit is holding steadfast to that goal. Even when you fall down.” Through this positive and encouraging session, participants will identify the “ultimate concern” that helps keep them engaged through challenging times. We will also identify the practices that undermine grit and how to avoid the stress that leads to anxiety, panic, burnout, and breakdown.
3:00 PM – Develop The Strategy
Drawing upon the work of UCLA’s Dr. Richard Rumelt, and other strategists, we will explore the key components of good strategy as introduced in Rumelt’s book, “Good Strategy/Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why it Matters”. In this highly practical session, we will review the three elements of strategy development, provide samples of good strategy, and provide an opportunity for participants to develop the framework for a strategy they can utilize in their own lives.
3:45 PM – Break
4:00 PM – Lead Effectively
Introduced by Case Western Reserve University professor, Richard Boyatzis, Ph.D., the Intentional Change Theory (ICT), provides a compelling roadmap for leading and managing change. Utilizing breakthrough research into how the brain processes change, Boyatzis demonstrates how different parts of the brain respond to different types of change. Through this discussion, participants will review the key concepts and will be given an opportunity to design a plan to be used in their own lives.
5:00 PM – Conclusion
